Poem written after reading To Kill a Mockingbird

Innocence Fades With Time

Everyday at school,
We see little dirty snowmen all around,
The teachers wear those professional suits of theirs,
The students have those innocent smiles

Everyday at school,
You can watch as some are dragged down,
Gossip spreads like wildfire,
Everyday at school

We all act nice as we walk the halls,
Hiding anything inappropriate or mean,
Once school is out or we make it to our classes,
The snowman melts,
Showing how much innocence we lose

Everyday at school,
It gets worse for everyone,
Soon there will be only pain in these walls,
Trapped here like we all are,

As time goes by we will grow older,
We will lose the innocence that was once ours,
It’s our own doing,
Gossiping and being mean,
We bring it upon ourselves.

Everyday we lose more innocence,
Everyday we grow older,
Each day we almost leave our nest,
Our mockingbird will leave soon,
For each day it grows harder,
And even harder to not grow-up,
To stay the same sweet innocence,
That slowly is fading away.
